Buffalo Park Centre and Regional Archives

Historic Wainwright Hotel sm.JPGThe Wainwright Buffalo National Park Interpretive Centre Foundation (Buffalo Park Foundation) was incorporated in 2001 to preserve the disappearing history of Buffalo National Park, one of the earliest and largest wildlife saving efforts in North America.

The Buffalo Park Foundation has purchased the historic Wainwright Hotel for the future Buffalo Park Centre and Regional Archives. This Centre will preserve, present, and interpret the Buffalo Park story and other regional histories for the education and enjoyment of present and future generations. The centre will have an innovative and modern 3-D exhibit, interactive displays, rotational exhibit space, a regional archives, educational programming and tourist information services.

Renovation is Beginning for the Buffalo Park Centre

The Buffalo Park Foundation is starting renovations of the Wainwright Hotel.  Show your support by volunteering your time for the selective demolition or by donating to our cause.

Volunteers can come by the office at the old CN Station and talk to Ellen or you can email ellen@buffaloadventures.ca or call 780-842-9247.

Buffalo Park Centre Tours

The Buffalo Park Centre offers tours on the themes of Buffalo National Park, Internment Camp 135, and the early history of Wainwright. The Centre is currently located at the lovingly restored historic Canadian National Railway station at the end of Main Street (1001, 1st Avenue), in Wainwright, Alberta.

Parks and POWs Tour

Buffalo National Park and POWs 1.jpgExperience the rich history of the Wainwright region at the Wainwright Museum (located in the historic CN Train Station). Our interpreter will take you on a journey of Wainwright’s history through film footage, photographs and artefacts. Included are stories and exhibits of the Buffalo National Park (1909-1939), one of Canada’s earliest and largest wildlife saving efforts and Internment Camp 135, Canada’s Second World War Prisoner of War Camp in Wainwright (1945-1946).

Tour Length: 1 hour plus self-guided museum tour.

Adults: $12       

Children (5-12 yrs): $3.75

Group rates available.

Admission to Wainwright Museum included as part of this tour.


Historic Wainwright Tour

Historic Mainstreet Wainwright Tour.jpgStep back in time on a guided walking tour of early Wainwright that begins at the 1928 CN Train Station, now the Wainwright Museum. Discover the history of Wainwright and its historic building, built after the town fire of 1929, through photographs and a interesting tales that bring historic Wainwright and the people that built this town alive.

Tour Length: 1 hour plus self-guided museum tour.

Adults: $12

School Tours

Discover the people and stories of Wainwright on your tour to the Wainwright Museum. Tours can include stories of: Buffalo National Park, Canada’s effort to save the plains bison from extinction; Prisoner of War Camp 135 – the stories of German Prisoners in Wainwright during the Second World War; and stories of early Wainwright.
